PANE AMARO (Bitter Bread): The Italian American Journey from Despised Immigrants to Honored Citizens
This 2009 feature-length documentary in English has been called the first comprehensive depiction on film of the Italian immigrant experience in the United States. The film tracks the social, economic and political transformation of Italians from immigrant victims of violence and prejudice to prominent members of American society. The story is told by weaving together comments by noted American scholars with personal accounts from members of the community, and through the use of a treasure trove of historical photographs and footage.
Major funding for PANE AMARO was provided by the NIAF- National Italian American Foundation and by the Foreign Ministry of Italy.
